Falana Urges FG to Sue South Africa Over Alleged Killings of Nigerians

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has urged the Federal Government to move beyond diplomatic protests and pursue legal action against South Africa over the alleged killings and abuse of Nigerians in the country.

Falana’s call follows the reported killing of Nigerian cleric, Bishop Michael Taiwo Fakunle, in Johannesburg on September 4. Another Nigerian, James Uchechukwu Nwankwo, was also reported dead a day later following an alleged encounter with South African police.

The human rights lawyer urged Nigeria to consider taking South Africa before the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, arguing that available regional legal mechanisms should be used to seek accountability and justice.

Falana also called for better documentation of cases involving Nigerians and closer monitoring of investigations and prosecutions.
