Former England Defender Steven Caulker Opens Up on Stress of Unemployment, Struggling to Secure Coaching Job

October 21, 2026 By Sheba James Gala
Former England international Steven Caulker has spoken about the emotional toll of unemployment, revealing the frustration of applying for jobs for which he is qualified but failing to secure interviews.

The 34-year-old former defender shared his experience in a LinkedIn post on Sunday, October 18, 2026, after leaving his role as assistant manager at Turkish club Konyaspor in September. Caulker retired from professional football in 2025 and has since been pursuing opportunities in coaching.

“Being unemployed is stressful. I’ve been here many times before, I’m used to the rollercoaster of emotions, but it doesn’t make it any easier,” Caulker wrote.
He said it was painful to apply for positions for which he believed he had the necessary qualifications without even being invited for an interview. However, he stressed that rejection should not make him panic or abandon his ambitions.

Caulker encouraged himself and others facing similar challenges to remain resilient, citing Walt Disney as an example of someone who experienced rejection. He also highlighted the importance of maintaining a daily routine, staying physically active and remaining calm while searching for work.

The former centre-back said another challenge was turning down opportunities that did not align with his long-term career goals. He hopes to develop his coaching career in the United Kingdom or elsewhere in Europe, with the ambition of eventually managing a Premier League club.

Caulker’s post attracted significant attention, with the former footballer later reporting more than 30 podcast requests, 12 offers to invest in other people’s businesses, four invitations to events and three potential job offers within 48 hours. He also received more than 100 messages of support.

His experience highlights the uncertainty that can accompany career transitions, even for people with extensive professional experience and qualifications.
