2027 Elections May Be Postponed If Ebola Outbreak Spreads, Jide Idris Speaks

October 29, 2026 By Sheba James Gala
The Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), Jide Idris, has said Nigeria’s 2027 general elections could be postponed if the Ebola outbreak spreads widely enough to pose a significant threat to public health.

Idris made the disclosure during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, October 26, while responding to questions about whether the outbreak could affect the electoral timetable.

“We hope the election will not be postponed, but if the thing gets wide enough, that might be considered. As at now, there is no need for that,” he said, stressing that the decision to postpone the polls was beyond his authority.

His comments come amid Nigeria’s response to an Ebola Bundibugyo case confirmed in the Federal Capital Territory on October 20. The index patient was subsequently evacuated to Switzerland for further treatment, while health officials continued monitoring contacts and investigating possible exposures. The NCDC’s October 27 situation report listed 62 contacts linked to the case and no additional confirmed infections among them at that time.

Idris said Nigeria had been monitoring the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and anticipated the possibility of the virus reaching the country through international travel and population movement. He maintained that the public health response was being guided by the need to contain the disease rather than political considerations.
The NCDC chief also rejected suggestions that the outbreak could be used as a political weapon ahead of the elections, insisting that disease control should not be politicised. His remarks followed public debate over the government’s preparedness and the funding approved for Ebola prevention and response.

Nigeria’s presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s timetable reported by BusinessDay. For now, Idris said there was no reason to consider postponing the polls; any such consideration would depend on how the outbreak develops and the associated public health risks.
