Liverpool Stage Stunning Comeback to Beat Villarreal 4-3 in Champions League Thriller

October 23, 2026 By Sheba James Gala
Liverpool came from two goals down to defeat Villarreal 4-3 at Anfield on Tuesday night, October 20, securing their third consecutive victory in the UEFA Champions League league phase.

Villarreal took an early lead in the fourth minute when Georges Mikautadze capitalised on a defensive error by Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk to put the visitors ahead. Sergi Cardona doubled the Spanish side’s advantage in the 29th minute after finishing a well-worked attacking move.

Liverpool responded through Alexis Mac Allister, who headed home Kostas Tsimikas’ corner in the 36th minute. The hosts drew level just before half-time when Ronald Araujo rose at the far post to convert a cross from teenager Rio Ngumoha in added time.

The comeback gathered momentum after the break as Liverpool took control of the contest. Ngumoha produced another impressive run down the right flank before setting up Mac Allister, who scored his second goal of the night in the 65th minute to give the hosts the lead for the first time.
Three minutes later, Florian Wirtz extended Liverpool’s advantage to 4-2 with a left-footed finish after receiving a pass from Cody Gakpo. The goal marked a significant moment for the German playmaker, who had been seeking his first goal for Liverpool this season.

Villarreal refused to give up and reduced the deficit in the 87th minute through Tani Oluwaseyi, who finished from close range to set up a tense finale. The visitors pushed for another equaliser, but Liverpool held on to secure all three.
