Taiwan Invasion Fears Grow as China Intensifies Military Drills

September 14, 2026 By Sheba James Gala
China’s growing military activity around Taiwan is renewing questions over whether Beijing could eventually attempt to seize the self-governing island by force.

Military drills have increasingly become a regular feature around Taiwan, with analysts watching China’s exercises for signs of how its forces could operate during a potential conflict. Taiwan has also stepped up its own military and civil-defence preparations.

China claims Taiwan as part of its territory, while Taiwan maintains its self-governing system. Any conflict could also draw in the United States and other regional powers, making the Taiwan Strait one of Asia’s most closely watched security flashpoints.

The continuing drills, alongside China’s expanding military capabilities, have heightened concerns about the possibility of a future confrontation, although military exercises alone do not confirm that an invasion is imminent.
