Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has visited local markets to check the prices of food items amid ongoing concerns over the cost of living in the country.
Omokri said his market visits were aimed at assessing the affordability of basic commodities, including yam, rice, maize and fruits. He argued that the prices he observed showed that an average Nigerian could survive on about ₦3,000 a day.
He also maintained that poverty should be assessed within the economic realities of individual countries, noting that the purchasing power of ₦3,000 in Nigeria differs significantly from what the same amount can provide in countries such as the United States.
His position has, however, drawn criticism, with some Nigerians questioning whether checking selected food prices in a market adequately reflects the wider financial pressures faced by households.
